Pensioners are already dying from cold related illnesses, and the situation will only get far worse with the forthcoming increases in the cost of living and fuel bills.
It’s estimated that GAS PRICES WILL INCREASE BY UP TO 30% next year that will result in far higher number of Pensioners and those most vulnerable dying.
It is predicted the energy price cap will go up to about £1,660 in the summer, almost £400 an increase of 30%. Immediate action is for the Government to halt any increase to fuel and other bills. This must be followed up to make sure older people have a well-insulated, warm home with income needed to pay fuel bills. This should be a basic requirement for a decent society to do.
We must have a programme to insulate homes, this would help with the climate crisis, build more suitable properties, raise winter fuel allowance, ending the excessive profits of the big six energy companies.
London Region National Pensioners Convention (LR NPC) WHO ARE WE? LR NPC is the largest of the 16 NPC regions. We have over 120 affiliated groups representing Trade Union Branches, Retired Members Sections, Borough Pensioner Groups or Forums, Trades Councils, Residents Associations and other local or London wide groups. Added to this we have a growing number of individual (associate) members. WHAT DO WE STAND FOR? Our campaigns include demanding a decent state pension to lift pensioners out of poverty, demanding good quality care for the elderly, opposing means-testing, defending the NHS. Social Care, and other public services against Government cuts and finally retaining the much-valued Freedom Pass. In short, we campaign for issues that pensioners themselves consider important. WHAT DO WE DO? LR NPC acts as a coordinating body with affiliates retaining their autonomy according to their own rules. Affiliated groups have up to two delegates to the LR NPC Regional Council, that elect officers (unpaid) and an Executive Committee (EC). The EC meets monthly to carry forward the campaigns. Quarterly Regional Council meetings are open to all affiliates (and visitors), who also get regular monthly bulletins.
Remember UNITY IS STRENGTH. We hope you will join a local group, but if that is not possible, or if you require further information, please contact one of us.
