The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the gap in life expectancy between rich and poor, and across various parts of the country has widened over the last few years.
Life expectancy is highest in Kensington and Chelsea and lowest in Glasgow City, with the average across the UK being 78 for a man and 82 for a woman.
These figures add even more weight to our argument against raising the state retirement age because they clearly show that those who would lose the most in pension and years free from work would be the poorest in our society.
The NPC’s detailed policy on retirement can be found in our pamphlet entitled The Politics of Ageing priced £1 (inc p&p). You can order a copy using the form on the Publications page.
