In July the UK Payments Council announced it was abandoning plans to scrap cheques by 2018. Whilst this decision was welcomed by the NPC, there is still a concern that many retailers and banks may continue to make the use of cheques more and more difficult. The withdrawal of the cheque guarantee card has already led to more businesses refusing to accept cheques.
The NPC is therefore calling for the long-term use of cheques and the reintroduction of the guarantee card, as an important way of enabling older people to manage their financial affairs.
Supporters are now encouraged to write to their banks and building societies asking them what steps they are taking to ensure that the future of cheques is safe. The NPC will also continue to raise this issue with the UK Payments Council and the banking industry.
